| Many believe that addiction will be the issue of the coming decade.
Significant reasons exist for this explosion in addictive behavior,
but probably the central one is the great growth of relational pain
in family and personal life. Relationships have become more painful
than loving. When people are cut off from love and affection and are
left with in their pain, the brutalizing question simply becomes:
how to ease the pain and gain some pleasure. In addition, our culture has taken the back alley business of addictions and are now turning them into growth industries. |
Cigarettes and alcohol have for a long time been on the stock market, but now other addictions have become shares to be purchased. National industries, like General Motors, have become major suppliers of pornography. On Wall Street gambling stock can be bought. Even state government now tout the benefits of gambling and wagering for education. Ever mounting pain and the willingness of business to cash in on the misery of the human heart has created a personal, family and cultural crisis. Next Page
