In 1993 I was just embarking on a new phase in my life, going back
to college after 30 years to take some counseling courses. As
one of my electives I could take anything I wanted to fill in one
unit. I found out about Dr. Eckman's
Acceptance Seminar, now called
Setting the Heart Free,
and decided that it would fill that slot. Little did I know
that it was God-appointed for me in my own journey of healing and
recovery.
The one theme throughout was that "I was worth a Son to God."
If I didn't remember anything else that one phrase got a hold of my
heart and forever changed my concept of God. As many of us
know we grow up with a distorted view of who God really is, and I
was no exception. My view was one of judgment and
condemnation: an unseen, uncaring God that was waiting for me
to make a simple mistake so he could 'zap' me with guilt and shame.
Praise God, through many more creative word pictures, like the
"Salad Bar", and my acceptance from the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
God began to change my view to one of love, care and true
acceptance, not so that I could remain the same with a better
self-esteem, but someone that could be victorious and go on to share
that love and acceptance with others.
I have had the privilege of facilitating small groups using this
material as it has been developed over time and have seen lives
changed in the process. At the end of each lesson is one of
those thought provoking and challenging word pictures that create an
atmosphere for change that is real and lasting. If you have
been struggling for years as I have and are now really serious about
turning your life around, invest your time and energies in these
excellent studies and you won't be disappointed. Listen
carefully and start applying God's truth to your life.
