In the Setting the Heart Free seminar, Dr. Eckman presented the truths of the Bible in a way that touched my heart and brought me to a new understanding of God. The truth that God didn’t just love me, but He enjoyed me, stood out to me that weekend. I didn’t have to earn His pleasure or make Him like me. In fact, He valued me so much even when I was a sinner that He saw me as being worth His Son’s death. Dr. Eckman not only taught about God’s love in the seminar; he exemplified it in his interactions with me that weekend. Upon seeing him in the morning, before the seminar would begin, he would greet me personally. In a room of thirty people, it surprised me that the “almighty speaker” would acknowledge me! After the weekend ended, as he was about to leave, I hung behind the rest of the Crusade staff, wanting to say goodbye, but too embarrassed to draw attention to myself, and certainly not expecting him to. But he looked at me and held out his arms. There was no reason for him to notice me that weekend, but he did. With that action, Dr. Eckman gave me an image of how God feels towards me. God notices me out of a world of four billion people. He opens His arms and embraces me because He enjoys me! This understanding of God’s positive emotions grew later when I read Dr. Eckman’s workbook, Becoming What God Intended. I even started to comprehend negative emotions and that the proper response is to take them to God when I have them. I learned that serving God should take place out of love and gratitude, not out of a desire to earn His approval. My faith became less an act of the will and more of a loving relationship between the Father and child. How incredible to realize that God has such
affection for me! I am thankful that He used Dr. Eckman

My first contact
with Dr. Eckman and BWGI Ministries occurred during my
internship with Campus Crusade for Christ.
