As our women’s
Bible study support group pondered what our next study
should be, we glanced at
Relationships: Couples Connection! and
tossed it aside. Obviously not appropriate since we
are not a couples’ group. But the topics in the book
intrigued us: Who are we?, communication, and new
realities. We decided to give it a
try as long as we could all abide by a few rules:
- I will use “I” statements.
- I will listen to what God has for me
to learn about myself, not about my husband.
- I will protect my husband and not
talk about him.

The result was a rich, life-changing study of
how and why God created man and woman to be equal but unique.
We were motivated to quit fighting the differences between women and
men and to consider how God has uniquely formed each of us for
specific tasks. We determined to discover our own
strengths and consider what God intends for each of us as women in
today’s culture. And we committed to consider daily what
thinking and attitudes God wants to renew in our minds and emotions.
We determined that doing this study without husbands enabled us to
consider the topics without defensiveness and hidden agendas.
We were able to focus on our own need to change without worrying
about whether our husbands were “listening to the Spirit of God.”
Our group rules were a challenge but facilitated our own ability to
listen to the Spirit. We are grateful to God for choosing this
study for us even though it is meant for couples.
P.S. We thought it would be interesting if our husbands were to do
the study together and then repeat it as couples. Hasn’t
happened yet……..
